IBM Power On Pword Problem?

I've got an old IBM Thinkpad that I was going to try searching on for some of my old music. It came up with a Stuck Key Error, which a quick search suggested to reset the CMOS by removing the internal battery for a few minutes and trying again. Now, I get an error about the system being tampered with and then a padlock icon shows up. I could easily enter the pword, BUT the keyboard just beeps when anything is pressed. What can I do to get the keyboard to work?
