Can someone explain to me how the germans managed to stop the world's best player,lionel messi?

yes,the germans attack was flawless but how did their manage to keep out lionel messi??..i mean look at the german defence.Apart from lahm,they have freidrich(hertha berlin),mertesacker(werder bremen) and boateng(Hamburg).How did defenders of such calibre keep messi quite even though the likes of lucio and ferdinand may not stop him...I fail to understand how players from a decent club,werder bremen,a relegated hertha berlin,a mediocre hamburg could possibly stop messi...and the main point is they didnt require their goalkeeper to keep messi quite...HOW????????
