Furniture appraisers! Question about 1700's Scottish piece?

My folks have a vintage antique sideboard supposedly made in Scotland during the late 1700's. Where on this piece did the crafter usually mark or label their work? My Dad has looked up and down on it for any kind of clue as to who exactly made it----any help would be appreciated! I know my description was brief.
