Why does diesel cost more than gas, if diesel is a byproduct of making gas.?

I don't understand the reason either and have often wondered! Back in the 70s and 80s diesel was very cheap, much cheaper than regular. Kerosene was the same way. I hope someone gives you a good answer here, I'd like to know.
